Systematic survey for Sudden Oak Death

Walter R. Mark
Natural Resources Management Department, California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, CA 93407

During the summer of 2001 a systematic survey of Sudden Oak Death in California was conducted. This survey was done in conjunction with a remote sensing survey using ADAR imagery to detect SOD based on spectral analysis. To implement regulations for Sudden Oak Death the CA Department of Food and Agriculture and The Oregon Department of Agriculture requires a thorough systematic survey of oaks, tanoaks, rhododendron, huckleberry and other potential hosts of Sudden Oak Death. A nursery and wildland survey were conducted, this presentation is based on the results from the wildland survey. The extent of SOD on various hosts was determined and thousands of samples were analyzed to confirm the presence of the SOD Phytophthora.
