Proceedings of 1990 Oak Symposium Available

On October 31 through November 2,1990, the Symposium on Oak Woodlands and Hardwood Rangeland Management was held at the Davis Campus. This was the third in a series of research symposia directed at hardwood rangelands (Plumb, 1980; Plumb and Pillsbury, 1987; Standiford, 1991). This latest symposium contained sixty-six papers and posters, organized into six different sections, including regeneration and restoration of oaks; wildlife habitat relationships; factors influencing conversion of hardwood rangelands; management strategies to ensure sustainability; ecology, conservation and management of Engelmann oak; and monitoring, classifying and analyzing hardwood rangeland. Approximately seventy percent of the research papers were either directly or indirectly funded by the Integrated Hardwood Range Management Program. Over 350 researchers, managers of hardwood rangelands, policy makers, and members of various conservation and landowner organizations attended this successful program. Much of the current state of our knowledge, derived as a result of die IHRMP research program, can be found in the proceedings of this symposium available from the USDA Forest Service Pacific Southwest Research Station in Berkeley.

Master Oak Program Launched

In fall 1991, the University of California IHRMP and the San Luis Obispo County Extension Office launched a master oak Tree Grower program. It’s not often that college students, senior citizens, housewives, businessmen, and environmentalists can agree on one issue, but fifty of them did agree when they enrolled in a series of five master Oak Tree Grower workshops. At the workshops, in-depth training and hands-on experience were given on oak identification, values, and issues; collecting, storing, and planting acorns; oak tree pests and diseases; and landscaping and construction around oaks. Of the fifty people who enrolled, twenty-eight became certified Master Oak Tree Growers.

To receive certification, each student successfully completed a written examination of materials presented in the workshops and designed a project involved with oak regeneration and education. Projects involve replanting land where the number of oaks has been depleted due to poor regeneration, removals, or urbanization. Other projects include formation of a Festival of the Oaks in Atascadero for spring 1992, a special oak regeneration event for Arbor Day, and staffing oak booths at local Farmers’ Markets. In the development stage is a Master Oak Program for North San Luis Obispo County.

There are several Master Programs in Cooperative Extension, but this is the first one on oak trees. The interest, enthusiasm, and support for the San Luis Obispo County Master Oak Tree Grower Program suggests it will likely not be the last.
