A Planner’s Guide to Oak Woodlands, 2nd Edition

Authors: Gregory A. Giusti, Douglas D. McCreary, Richard B. Standiford

First published in 1992, A Planner's Guide to Oak Woodlands was the first such manual of its kind. Designed for professional planners, consultants, and landscape architects, this new edition provides science-based information that can guide decision-making.

Chapters cover a range of planning and conservation topics including -

• Biology of Oak Resources
• Wildlife Habitat
• Watershed Management
• Regional Planning
• Mapping Resources and Modeling Risk for Improved Land Use Planning
• Ordinances

The encroachment into oak woodlands addressed at the time of the first edition has not stopped, and in some cases it has continued at an alarming rate. As more development occurs in the oak woodlands this guide can provide a framework for preserving this icon of the California landscape.

The 116-page second edition also features a sturdier binding and more photographs.

Vineyards in An Oak Landscape

New IHRMP publication explores the physical, biological, and social benefits of maintaining and restoring native vegetation in and around vineyards.

This colorful 15-page brochure is designed for grape growers with vineyards next to woodlands, landowners considering vineyard development, and those generally interested in agriculture and natural resource issues. It emphasizes the unique values of oak woodlands in California, the threats facing oak woodlands from agricultural expansion, and how to conserve natural resources in and around the vineyard. Specifically, this publication provides practical land management information for grape growers on how to conserve biodiversity, protect oak trees, prevent vine diseases transmitted from native vegetation, control erosion, mitigate environmental damage, protect riparian and wetland areas, and support wildlife. Adina Merenlender and Julia Crawford, UCB Integrated Hardwood Range Management Program (IHRMP) wrote Vineyards in an Oak Landscape. This brochure is designed to help California grape growers select management options that will optimize natural resource conservation.

Proceedings of the Fifth Oak Symposium on Oak Woodlands

Proceedings of the Fifth Symposium on Oak Woodlands: Oaks in California's Changing Landscape
(CD-ROM)

The fifth oak symposium was designed to provide a forum for current research and outstanding case studies on oak woodland conservation and sustainability in California. The previous conferences—held in 1979, 1986, 1990, and 1996—serve as rich sources of information about a wide range of subjects on oak ecology, management, uses, planning and conservation. This conference is aimed at natural resource managers, researchers, policy makers, and public and private interest groups. Seventy-two papers are presented in the proceedings. Topics covered include: grazing relations, soil relations, Garry oak conservation, oak regeneration and restoration, fire relations, wildlife relations, urban forestry, oak woodland policy, genetic factors, monitoring, ecology, and a special session on "Sudden Oak Death."
