1998 Annual Report
Extension Education Evaluation Topical Interest Group
F. Richard Rohs, 1998 Chair
The AEA-EEE-TIG completed its thirteenth year of operations by conducting a number of activities relating to TIG communications, membership, professional development and leadership.
Table of Contents
Communications: The TIG has been
continually committed to reaching its members in a cost effective manner. The annual
business meeting, two electronic newsletters as well as additional memos to members are
the major mechanisims used to keep the membership informed and involved. The TIG
leadership in 1996 sought to increase access to the organizational information base and to
increase the interactivity potential for members by establishing an on-line EEE-TIG Home
Page where information about the TIG and its activities could be posted and where papers
from TIG-sponsored annual meeting sessions could be accessed. We have continued to
maintain this web site and have updated it again in 1998. We are encouraging all EEE-TIG
presentors at the 1998 AEA Conference to submit their papers to our web page. In addition
to the newsletters the TIG leadership met four times since the last annual meeting-( once
during the AEA Conference and three conference calls) to conduct the business of the TIG.
Membership: The membership of the EEE-TIG
stands at 171, based on latest estimates. Of this number 155 reside in the US and 12
reside outside the US and 12 retirees. While the majority of the members are involved in
the national land grant system of extension, several members come to us from other arenas
such as nonformal educational organizations and programs. To continue to publicize our TIG
to potential members our EEE-TIG brochure has been updated to reflect organizational
changes and new leadership voted on by the membership at the 1997 annual meeting. Copies
of this new brochure were sent to all TIG regional representatives and board members.
Regional representatives used these brochures in recruitment efforts with colleagues or
other persons who may be interested in our TIG and AEA. These brochures are also available
to the general TIG membership to share with colleagues or other potential members.
Professional Development: The
major form of professional development within the TIG is the provision of a peer review
forum for members to share their professional work and insights. This year 38 members
submitted proposals for sessions at the annual meeting. The TIG will sponsor three paper
sessions with 16 presenters, two panel sessions, one workshop, one poster and one
roundtable. Rich Poling, chair-elect managed the call for papers and the review process.
The TIG Board served served as the review panel.
A second form of support for professional development is through various awards
available through the TIG to honor exemplary evaluation achievements. This year, Mary
Andrews provided the leadership for the call for nominations and the review process. Four
awards are being presented this year. They are: 1)Sustained Excellence in Extension
Evaluation Award-Recipient-Dr. Mary Marshall of Texas A&M University, 2) Excellence in
Program Evaluation Award for Sustained Quality and Scholarly Merit in Extension
Evaluations-Recipient-Dr. Nancy Ellen Kiernan, Pennsylvania State University, 3) Mary Nell
Greenwood extension Evaluation Award for Outstanding Organizational, Policy and Resource
Contributions to Extension Evaluation -Recipient- Dr. Ellen Fitzsimmons, University of
Wisconsin and 4) Outstanding leadership and Service to the Extension Evaluation
Profession-Recipient- Dr. John Michael, CSREES/USDA. This last award is a new award
approved by the TIG Board during its last meeting. These awards will be presented during
the annual TIG-organized social event during the annual meeting. This year, North Central
Regional Host, Ellen Taylor Powell with assistance from Charlie Clark planned a dinner
social at the Berghoff Restaurant in the Chicago Loop. Approximately 30 people will be
attending the event for fellowship and sharing.
Leadership: Three openings will be filled
for Officers of the EEE-TIG this year. These are Chair-elect, North Central and South
Regional Representative. Thanks to the efforts of the Board who served as the nominating
committee, and thanks also, to the candidates who are willing to serve in leadership roles
in the organization. Elections will be held during the annual business meeting with the
possibility of submitting electronic ballots, for those not in attendance. Outgoing
Officers are Mary Andrews as Past-Chair, Ellen Taylor Powell as North Central Regional
Representative, and Kathleen Tajeu as South Regional Representative. Thanks to all of you
for your service to our professional association! It has been a pleasure to work with
individuals who have been enthuisiastic, helpful and offered valuable service this past
year.
Respectfully Submitted,
F. Richard Rohs
Outgoing Chair '98
