605 AFFIRMATIVE ACTION/DIVERSITY TRAINING
All Division personnel shall have the opportunity to receive civil rights, affirmative action and diversity training yearly. Training should promote a work environment that reflects the Division's commitment to diversity, and ensure that personnel who have direct contact with the public maintain a proper understanding of appropriate civil rights requirements. It is the responsibility of the Division to train all personnel to carry out their responsibilities for achieving employment and programmatic compliance.
Equal opportunity, affirmative action, and diversity training should be provided not only for employees, but also for volunteers who are designated as agents of the University. Training topics may include formal and informal grievance procedures, disability awareness, spirit and intent of equal opportunity/affirmative action policies, multicultural diversity, sexual harassment, and effective outreach strategies in program activities.
For the Division to meet its affirmative action/diversity/outreach training obligations, the following actions are required:
- All new employees are to receive civil rights orientation within sixty days of their appointment.
- All CE academic appointees (including campus-based Specialists), as well as Division staff and volunteers, are to receive training in multicultural diversity, in the social and demographic base of this diversity, in disability awareness, and in the implications of this diversity for achieving equal opportunity in both employment practices and program delivery.
- Each year, the Regional Directors, with assistance from the DAA, are to develop a civil rights, affirmative action, and diversity training plan based on federal and university requirements and on areas of need identified in the annual review process.
To facilitate this training, the DAA has made the following provisions:
- An Affirmative Action Trainer, under the direction of the DAA, is responsible for consulting with all line managers, as appropriate, to develop, implement, and monitor the annual training plans.
- The glossary of equal opportunity/affirmative action terms (see Section 601, Appendix IV) shall be used as an integral part of all affirmative action/diversity/outreach training.
- A directory of outreach efforts in employment and program activities shall be used in training to facilitate awareness of effective affirmative action/outreach/diversity programs throughout the Division.
- Audiovisual and written materials have been developed for use in civil rights, affirmative action, diversity, and outreach training.
- Audiovisual and published materials have been produced for use by Division's personnel.
- The Resource Center for Diversity contains a variety of audiovisual and written resources. These are available for loan to Division personnel.
