NRCC 2002: Restoration Ecology and Conservation Biology - DANR's Current and Emerging Programs
Overview and Objectives:
The Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources (DANR) Natural Resource Coordinating Conference (NRCC) has met annually for the past nine years. The objective of the Coordinating Conference is to bring together the workgroups, special projects, and AES and CE academics working in the broad area of natural resources to:
- Identify current priorities in natural resources;
- Provide training on current high priority topics (past topics have included biodiversity, riparian restoration, fire ecology, natural resources in agriculture, marine and terrestrial interface, salmon ecology and management);
- Present successful examples of effective natural resource programming;
- Build teams of advisors, specialists, and faculty to develop responses to issues;
- Become aware of emerging natural resource policy issues.
Each year, 40 to 80 members of DANR meet together to accomplish these broad goals. Range, livestock, forest, marine, wildlife, fisheries, environmental policy, youth education, and general natural resource advisors, specialists and faculty members participate in the NRCC.
The Steering Committee for this year's NRCC has been asked by the DANR Program Council to focus on the current and emerging research and extension programs within DANR in restoration ecology and conservation biology. The primary part of the meeting will have presentations from each campus and region on current DANR programs in these important areas. There will be discussions of where DANR programs should be heading, given the current base of interest in these important areas.
All participants will also be able to learn about the accomplishments and future plans of the various Natural Resource workgroups. Each workgroup will present a poster of their activities during the reception poster session. Funds are available to support the production of these posters (contact Bill Frost at: wefrost@ucdavis.edu).
The program also allows for special breakout sessions of the various workgroups and statewide special projects during the first day and a half of the meeting time. Please indicate if your group would like an opportunity to participate in this. There will also be a post-conference field tours of restoration and conservation biology programs in the Sacramento Valley area.
