Shafter REC

The California Crop Improvement Association (CCIA) provided a $500,000 grant to support operational costs of the Shafter Research & Extension Center. The center is the University of California’s principal field research facility for cotton and serves as a good example of cooperation between UC, federal and local government, and the cotton industry in the San Joaquin Valley. Shafter is one of ten Research and Extension Centers operated by the UC Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANR). The mission of CCIA, a non-profit corporation, is to serve officially as the seed-certifying agency under the California Seed Law and to engage in other activities to promote the production, distribution, and use of good seed.

5-a-Day Campaign

The Public Health Institute approved over $900,000 in multiple grants to the Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources to implement the 5-a-Day Campaign.  The California 5-a-Day Campaign is a statewide nutrition initiative led by the California Department of Health Services in cooperation with the Public Health Institute and over 60 partnering organizations.  The statewide goal of the campaign is to encourage 9, 10, and 11 year-old children and their families to sustain a high-fiber, low-fat diet that will promote better health.  The University of California Cooperative Extension network is one of the primary organizations delivering the educational program to participating communities throughout the state.

The David & Lucille Packard Foundation funded a $100,000 grant request submitted by the University of California’s Genetic Conservation Resource Program (GCRP) to establish the Monterey Pine Forest Ecology Cooperative.  The purpose of the Ecology Cooperative is to support science-based, conservation-directed management of the natural Monterey Pine Forest, and its associated ecosystem processes and species.

In recent years, the Monterey Pine ecosystem has been under increased environmental pressures, due primarily to human-caused influences such as loss of habitat to urban and recreational development, forest fragmentation, genetic contamination, and, most recently, high mortality from an introduced pathogen complex called pitch canker.  Dr. Deborah Rogers, Ph.D. in Forest Genetics, is the principal investigator in charge of the Ecology Cooperative.

Poultry Showmanship

The Bob & Pat Dean 4-H Directorship was established with a $100,000 gift from Mr. and Mrs. Dean.  The gift creates an endowment for the Directorship of the California 4-H Foundation.  The gift is a key component of a long-term fund-raising effort that in the years ahead will provide a secured funding base for 4-H and its operational needs.  The 4-H Youth Development program provides meaningful, learn-by-doing educational activities to children in 4-H clubs and to children participating in school enrichment and after-school programs.  The 4-H program is a major component of ANR’s statewide outreach efforts in the area of human resources and is implemented in more than 50 counties.

Glassy-winged Sharpshooter

The California Grape & Treefruit League provided a $48,000 grant to ANR to support research that is monitoring and controlling the spread of Pierce’s disease in Kern and Tulare counties.  Pierce’s disease, a lethal disease of grapevines, is caused by the bacterium Xylella fastidiosa and is spread by certain kinds of leafhoppers known as sharpshooters.  Pierce’s disease represents a major threat to the grape farming industry and more than ten ANR research projects are presently being implemented to address this major biological hazard.

Pierce's Disease

Queenscares, a non-profit entity based in Los Angeles approved a $40,000 gift request submitted by the Los Angeles 4-H Chapter.  The grant supports after-school activities for children who live in public housing communities in central Los Angeles.  The programmatic activities include nutrition and fitness education, and wellness skills to 150 children who live in three Los Angeles public housing communities and adjacent schools.  The population served at these sites consists of children 7-13 years old who fall into the following ethnic groups: 94 % Hispanic, 4% Asian, and 2% African American.

Monterey County Vintners and Growers Foundation funded a $10,000 grant request to support research in viticulture and enology in Monterey County.  The grant is part of a long-term project to address rootstocks evaluation and resistance to Grape Phylloxera, an aphid infestation that attacks grape roots, stunting growth of vines or killing them.  Infestations of Phylloxera have caused havoc in Monterey County, requiring in many instances the replanting of whole vineyards.  The tiny aphid was responsible for killing more than three million acres of vines in Europe in the 1880s.  The Monterey County Growers Foundation has provided more than $100,000 in private support in the last ten years to ANR.

‘Canna Tropicana’ used as a biological filter in Newport Bay

The Orange County Farm Bureau funded the last grant ($30,000) of a three-year research project to study the total maximum daily load of contaminants in Newport Bay/San Diego Creek Watershed.  Responding to federal and state mandates of the Federal Clean Water Act and Regional Quality Control Board, the project also monitors contaminants produced by counties, cities, and growers that impair the beneficial uses of Newport Bay.

Dean Witter approved a $20,000 gift to support the development of architectural plans for the Sedgwick Reserve facility.  The reserve will undergo capital improvements to improve teaching and housing facilities.  The Sedgwick reserve (2,382 acres) was established in 1996 and is located 35 miles north of the city of Santa Barbara.

In-Kind Gifts

Panelized Structures of Modesto, California, donated more than $500,000 in equipment to the Kearney Research and Extension Center.  The gift included a 200 square-foot growth chamber with an estimated value of  $150,000.  The structure will house an insectary and environmental growth chamber that will support a number of on-going research projects.

On the Campuses

Magrit & Robert Mondavi at UC-Davis

Robert and Magrit Mondavi pledged $25 million to help create the unique Robert Mondavi Institute for Wine & Food Science at UC Davis.  The gift will be combined with campus funds and other private contributions to build a 127,000 square foot, state-of-the-art research and teaching facility to house the UC Davis departments of viticulture and enology, and food science and technology.  The departments are currently housed in 50-year-old buildings inadequate for the advanced level of research implemented.  The new facility will include research and teaching laboratories, a culinary center, a brewery, barrel rooms, and a dairy foods research laboratory.  Groundbreaking is expected in 2004.

CCAH to open in 2003

The Wayne & Gladys Valley Foundation contributed $3 million to support the Center for Companion Animal Health (CCAH), a capital project of UC Davis’ School of Veterinary Medicine.  Other major contributors include the Koret Foundation ($1 million), Maddie’s Fund ($1 million) and the Paul Borghill Petersen Foundation ($500,000).  The $14 million privately-funded 33,000 square-foot building is projected for completion in 2003.  The center will incorporate laboratories, clinical cancer treatment areas and teaching space.

The University of California launched an initiative to create the California Institute for Agricultural Genomics, a UC Berkeley, Davis, and Riverside collaboration to provide technological and scientific breakthroughs in plant, animal, pest, disease, and nutritional genomics.   Although not funded by the State of California Scientific Review Panel in 2000, the initiative will continue to be introduced for funding in the years ahead.   The capital project required  $200 million in private support as a stipulation for receiving state funding.
